When they say everything goes downhill age 35+...DO NOT BELIEVE THE HYPE!
First of all this post comes from a place of love and empathy. I've worried about getting older, about turning 40 next year in the fitness industry and about so many of the things you may think about too. We are all human, but one thing that has never crossed my mind is that I will all of a sudden lose the ability to keep improving my body composition and one day wake up and not be able to do the splits! Getting older is something that IS out of our circle of control and I accept that 100%, so instead of dwelling on that let’s do all the things in our control to make sure that we keep moving forwards and keep growing.
3 statements I hear over and over:
1. I know my metabolism has slowed down now I'm *insert age* (I have heard this from people in their late 30s so many times!)
2. Will I still be able to build muscle now I'm *insert age*
3. I feel so stiff and old, is it too late to improve my mobility/flexibility? (This is the one that I hear most even from girls in their 20s!!)
STOP. These are examples of statements NOT to say to yourself age 35+... (or any age for that matter)!
When you decide that it’s a downhill spiral the chances are it will be! Before you give up completely dig deep and really ask yourself are you doing the things IN YOUR CONTROL to improve your BMR? Are you yo-yo dieting? Are you weight training - not on and off - consistently 4/5 times a week to improve your body composition and the way your body performs? Are you eating adequate protein to build muscle? Are you monitoring your steps? If you're not as fit ‘as you were when you were younger’ is it because you are older or because other things have got in the way of you focusing on your fitness? Are you stiff because you are older or because you haven't been stretching regularly?
I think the question we need to consider is "Is the age part really that relevant?"
