Once upon a time one of my gymnastics coaches told me I was too tall to be good at gymnastics. I remember it so well like it was yesterday and I must have been no older than about 7. I didn t excel at gymnastics after that and I eventually gave up completely after breaking my wrist attempting a back flip.
Luckily I made another opportunity for myself to give sport another go and to achieve some of my dreams (I do believe this experience has fuelled my passion for pole and competing, more than I can even put into words!) Any regrets I have about gymnastics I have silenced in my head 100 x over and continue to do so every time I get upside down on a pole. As a coach I sing from the rooftops to my clients that they can achieve amazing things! I will always be your biggest cheerleader because I know how important it is for people to water your dreams like a precious flower. If someone says something negative to you don't let it consume you - it’s not a fact - it’s not a part of you. Instead let it challenge you and fuel you to be the best you can be.
Don't ever let someone else push their limiting beliefs onto you. Nobody should ever try to dull your sparkle and your dreams. Through my training as a Personal Trainer and Pole Athlete for 15 years, I started learning that the human body is an incredible engine that is powered by the fuel you feed it, the way you treat it and most of all your mind. This combined with the people I have worked with and the experiences I have had has lead me to learn that if you truly believe in yourself and your own potential you CAN defy genetics, zero experience, no ‘natural talent’ (is anyone actually born being able to do a back flip?) and most definitely other peoples poor comments. If you want something badly enough and your prepared to learn and put in the hard work you can and will achieve incredible things!
Yes genetics can be a factor in how quickly we excel at something. But you CAN excel at anything you put your mind to! The fact that I was slightly taller than average (I m now 5 foot 8) did not mean I couldn’t be amazing and keep enjoying the sport I loved! Look at Usain Bolt, he broke the ‘normal’ for that sport and look what he achieved!
